WHAT WE LOVE
Broccoli is one of those vegetables that does it all. It’s fresh, versatile and easy to use across everything from quick midweek meals to comforting winter dishes. Southern Forests broccoli is known for its vibrant green colour, crisp texture and naturally sweet flavour thanks to the region’s cool growing conditions. Whether roasted, steamed, grilled or added fresh to salads, it’s a kitchen staple packed with everyday goodness.
VARIETIES TO KNOW
The Southern Forests region provides ideal conditions for growing premium broccoli and broccolini, with cool temperatures, fertile soils and reliable rainfall helping develop excellent flavour, crisp texture and vibrant colour.
Traditional broccoli varieties are known for their tight green florets and hearty texture, making them perfect for roasting, soups, pasta dishes and comforting winter meals.
Broccolini, sometimes called tenderstem or baby broccoli, has become increasingly popular for its long delicate stems, smaller florets and naturally sweeter flavour. A hybrid of broccoli and Chinese kale, broccolini is prized by chefs for its tender texture and mild peppery sweetness. Unlike standard broccoli, the entire stem is tender and edible, making it ideal for grilling, charring and quick cooking.
Growers will often tell you that cooler growing conditions help broccoli develop sweeter flavour and firmer texture, particularly through the colder months when the plants mature more slowly. That slower growth helps create the dense florets and fresh crunch Southern Forests broccoli is known for.
